From its central location where the highlands meet the lowlands, Callander is the ideal base to explore Scotland’s majestic scenery.
The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is Scotland’s first designated National Park and is a natural treasure trove waiting to be discovered. There are 22 lochs in the park and many hills, rivers and trails.
Loch Katrine is a 15 minute drive from Callander and here you can take a trip on the Famous Sir Walter Scott – take either a round trip or stop off at Stronachlachar and cycle or walk back along the banks of the loch itself. Bicycles can also be rented at the pier.
At the nearby Lake Of Menteith you can visit the romantic Inchmahome Priory by taking a boat trip to the small island once inhabited by monks.
Heading east from Callander a fascinating day trip can be taken to visit the spectacular Falkirk Wheel, the only rotating boatlift in the world. Whilst in Falkirk you can also marvel at The Kelpies – two monumental horse-head sculptures that have to be seen to be believed.
Further afield but still within day trip distance Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth are all within one hour’s drive. The rugged and desolate beauty of Glen Coe and the home of golf, St Andrews are both fascinating day trip options.
Closer still, the city of Stirling is a 20 minute drive away. Here you can see where a lot of Scotland’s turbulent and violent history took place. A visit to the castle is a must as is the National Wallace Monument both have audio tours and dramatic, panoramic views of the surrounding area.
